Stachowski and Villa Maria College Unveil WiFi Campus Project

Villa Maria College was pleased to host a campus visit from New York Senator William Stachowski (D – 58th District, Buffalo) on February 16, 2010, to show off the schools latest Wi-Fi advancements, funded by a grant Senator Stachowski secured.
The Senator was instrumental in helping to securing funding that will enable the campus to go totally WIFI. According to Sister Marcella Marie Garus, the college President, “Establishing a campus wide Wi-Fi network is part of Villa Maria’s five year strategic plan, and is crucial to the college’s growth as a baccalaureate degree granting institution. We are grateful to Senator Stachowski for his help in securing the funding for campus wide WIFI.” When in place, campus wide Wi-Fi will allow students, faculty, and staff access to the internet and college network from any location on campus.
“I want to acknowledge the contributions Sister Marcella Marie Garus and Villa Maria College make in our community. I am proud to have played a role in improving the technology services available here to students,” said Senator Bill Stachowski. “This College’s addition of the new Wi Fi system will enable staff and students access to the college network from any location on campus, on the cutting edge of technology”
President Garus noted that In addition to expanded and enhanced opportunities for online learning, research, classroom presentations, advisement, meetings and collaboration, campus wide Wi-Fi will allow the college to make better use of the physical plant, “As Villa Maria College has transitioned into an institution offering baccalaureate programs, demands for space are increasing substantially. The success of space-intensive art programs, increased enrollment, and new offerings are stretching existing capacity. Currently, the only locations on campus with Wi-Fi access are the library and the cafeteria. Expanding Wi-Fi capability will allow for more flexible and effective use of all available space.”

In 2008, the Senator helped secure funding to establish a Fashion Design studio equipped with digital sewing machinery serving the College’s Fashion Design and Merchandising program. Fashion Design and Merchandising is one of the baccalaureate degree programs offered by the college. Since 2005, Villa Maria College has added seven baccalaureate degree programs to its twelve associate degree programs. Additional four year programs are in the planning stages.
