Senator Stachowski Presents Grant For Literacy Center
Funds to Benefit Children, Adult and Senior Reading Programs
Senator William T. Stachowski (D-58th District, Buffalo/Lakeview) visited the Dog Ears Bookstore on Abbott Road, in South Buffalo, to present a New York State Legislative grant to the Enlightenment Bookstore and Literary Arts Center for $10,000.
The Enlightenment Bookstore and Literary Arts Center develops and strengthens children's and adults' love of reading and literary arts, through neighborhood-based access programs, facilitation and education while offering a bookstore to perpetuate and encircle the reading and writing process.
“I am pleased to be a part of The Enlightenment Bookstore and Literary Arts Center success. It is gratifying to know that this grant will help continue to provide strong programs here in the South Buffalo neighborhood,” said Senator Stachowski.
“The illiteracy rate in Buffalo stands at a shocking 30%, and in Erie County it is 20%, well above the national average,” said Senator Stachowski. “This grant will allow the Enlightenment Bookstore and Literary Arts Center to continue their fight to change those numbers.”
“We have created a fun, funky and safe place where the written word rules. Our programs unite our community, and we present them in the most entertaining way imaginable. Shop knowing you make a difference and stop by knowing you are a friend,” said Thomas McDonnell, Executive Director. “This funding will ensure our longevity and anchor our presence in the community. It will allow us to continue to improve and expand our many programs, and add text books, journals, and workbooks.”
