EXCALIBUR LEISURE SKILLS CENTER, INC. RECEIVES $65,000 GRANT FROM SENATOR WILLIAM T. STACHOWSKI

September 17, 2009

Excalibur Leisure Skills Center, Inc will receive a $65,000 grant from New York State on behalf of Senator William T. Stachowski. This grant will assist Excalibur in providing an invaluable opportunity for our community’s differently abled, and disadvantaged to enjoy Lake Erie’s marine environment with boating and fishing opportunities.

Senator Stachowski is a noted proponent for many organizations, and state based agencies that support Western New York’s differently abled. Through the Senator’s dedicated support, many special needs individuals have experienced a more enriched life, with greater opportunities.

“It’s an honor to be involved with the Excalibur Project. So many Western New York residents have had their quality of life improved by the Excalibur Leisure Skills Center and I’m proud to be able to contribute to their success. It is my hope that the $65,000 that my office has awarded today will help Excalibur continue to provide the thrill of boating on our waterways for those who are disabled or disadvantaged for years to come”

So far this season Excalibur has been able to program more than 1,800 individuals, from over 100 Western New York human service agencies, on the “Richard A. Smith”. We at Excalibur are proud of the services we provide to this community and we are proud of our Captains and Volunteers who do such a wonderful job. The Excalibur crew consists of 25 licensed U.S. Coast Guard captains and nearly 125 dedicated volunteers. With Senator Stachowski’s assistance, Excalibur will be able to continue its programming and provide services for those individuals who deal with a wide range of disabilities and/or social and economic disadvantagements.

The only organization of its kind in the area, Excalibur Leisure Skills Center Inc. is a 501-C3 non profit agency, which has been providing boating and fishing excursions to individuals with special needs on wheelchair accessible boats since 1985. Excalibur’s new program vessel, a USCG inspected 35’ specially equipped and modified, wheelchair accessible Island Hopper open lake cruiser, the “Richard A. Smith”, is located and boards from the NFTA Boat Harbor Wheelchair Access Dock. The NFTA Boat Harbor is completely wheelchair accessible; to include parking lots, bathrooms, docks, etc. The Excalibur program runs from May 15th to October15th each season.
